The canals in Amsterdam are a focus of interest for its many visitors. We spend a lot of time looking down into them from quaysides, walking along narrow streets beside them, watching the manoevers of boat traffic, and listening to the slap and echo of canal water under bridges. When we take a canal tour, the guide will always point out Seven Bridges to us, where we can see through the arches of the bridge to another six bridges behind it. The bridge was built in 1772 so I think a lot of tourists have stopped for this view. The other title I had for the painting was "boats and bicycles" because in the heart of the city, they vie for being the dominant mode of transportation.
